Is A Gucci Plus Bag Vintage? Are They Real?

Are you into Gucci? Want something vintage?

Fans with a keen eye have seen Gucci Plus on top of the luxury monogram. But what is Gucci Plus? Is it part of the Gucci brand? And is it vintage?

We answer all that and more with this guide.

Gucci Plus history

The Gucci Plus Line was created by Paolo Gucci, a grandson of Guccio Gucci, in the 1970s to make the brand more accessible to younger audiences

He worked to reduce the handbag costs without compromising on quality. As a creative designer, he wanted something recognizable, but different from the regular GG monogram.

So, he added “PLUS” to the GG logo.

An internal family feud resulted in Aldo Gucci, his father, suing Paolo on copyright infringement, ruled in Paolo’s favor, allowing him to use the name “Gucci” on his products as long as buyers were able to tell the difference between the main Gucci line.

What is Gucci Plus?

The Gucci Plus canvas has the word “PLUS” on the GG logo. It was designed by Paolo Gucci in the 1970s and-1980s.

Though it was not approved at the Gucci fashion house, it is still seen as part of the Gucci brand.

Now, Gucci Monogram is called GG Supreme.

Frequently asked questions

Who started Gucci Plus?

Paolo Gucci, Guccio, Gucci's grandson, started Gucci Plus.

When was Gucci Plus made?

The Gucci Plus was made between the 1960s and 1970s, during the family feud era. However, it was discontinued in the 1980s. So, it’s a very rare Gucci item for collectors.

Is Gucci Plus authentic Gucci?

At the time, it was seen as a different brand from Gucci. More like a "rogue" or separate line, especially after the legal battle. Think of it like Marc by Marc Jacobs or Armani/Valentino as Gucci’s affordable sublines at the time. Since it’s a discontinued Gucci line, many view Gucci Plus as part of Gucci.
